Dr. Gillian Friedman obtained her medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, where she was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society.

Dr. Friedman remained at the University of Illinois at Chicago for her psychiatric residency. Her clinical experience included specialized training in neuropsychiatry, addiction and women's mental health. She concurrently completed a year-long seminar at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis.

Dr. Friedman subsequently completed a fellowship in women's mental health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her training included treatment of psychiatric problems and substance abuse during pregnancy and postpartum, perimenopausal disorders, eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder. During this period she served as psychiatric consultant to the university's obstetrics and gynecology service.

In addition to seeing patients for medication management and psychotherapy, Dr. Friedman is a writer, editor and reviewer for professional and lay audiences regarding women's mental health and general health issues. She currently serves as managing health editor for ABILITY Magazine, an award-winning national publication distributed by Time-Warner that explores health, wellness and human potential through interviews with celebrities, political leaders, business luminaries and everyday Americans.

A noted public speaker, Dr. Friedman has lectured on a diverse array of topics, including the psychiatric complications of multiple sclerosis, substance abuse in women, mental health treatment during pregnancy, the role for buprenorphine (Suboxone) in addiction therapy, and the psychological benefits of volunteering.

A long-time advocate for equality, rights and acceptance of individuals with mental health conditions, Dr. Friedman volunteers as medical consultant to the nonprofit ABILITY Awareness, a national organization striving to build a world of inclusion for people with disabilities through housing, education, employment, media and volunteer opportunities.
